This dataset is meant for general information about confirmed PFAS sites in Michigan and is a collection of basic datasets related to those PFAS sites which allow users to identify, query, and filter the data.

The second quarter for PFAS MCL compliance monitoring ran from April 1 - June 30, 2021, and included two groups of supplies:

Those supplies whose initial round monitoring returned a PFAS detection(s) for one of the analytes with an MCLs, placing them onto a quarterly monitoring schedule.
A number of those supplies which have demonstrated through sampling PFAS levels consistently and reliably below the PFAS MCLs, who are on an annual monitoring schedule. (Who opted to collect their annual sample during Quarter 1)

The initial compliance monitoring period ran from the date of MCL promulgation (August 3, 2020) until February 3, 2021, and included two groups of supplies:

Those supplies which had collected a sample during EGLE's statewide PFAS survey and returned a PFAS result with a detection greater than half of one of the proposed MCLs AND those supplies which had not previously collected a PFAS sample during EGLE's statewide PFAS survey, would sample during the first full quarter following promulgation (October 1, 2020 - December 31, 2020).

All remaining supplies which had collected a sample during EGLE's statewide PFAS survey would sample during the first six months following promulgation (August 3, 2020 - February 3, 2021).

Many industries discharge to municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) rather than discharge directly to surface waters or groundwater. Municipal WWTPs often regulate their industrial users through an Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) required by their NPDES or Groundwater discharge permit. The IPPs provide the basis for WWTPs to regulate industries so industrial pollutants do not interfere with treatment processes or pass through to our lakes, and streams, and groundwater. IPPs may require industries to pretreat wastewater or otherwise reduce or eliminate harmful pollutants. The IPP is a federally mandated program and a core part of the federal Clean Water Act.

Since implementation, significant progress has been made in identifying sources of PFAS, specifically PFOS, to WWTPs and reducing levels released to the environment.

This dataset shows testing results from the statewide sampling initiative for Michigan public water supplies conducted in 2018. Additional results from the testing will be added as they become available.

This dataset shows testing results from the statewide sampling initiative for Michigan schools on their own private well. Additional results from the school testing will be added as they become available.

If a school is not listed, it may be serviced by municipal water. If you are not sure where a school gets its drinking water, contact a school administrator. If a school is on municipal water, EGLE tested all of Michigan's municipal supplies in 2018 as part of Phase I.

The next phase of statewide PFAS surveillance testing was slated to begin in May 2019 and run through October 2019. This effort sampled non-community public water supplies which were not part of Phase I, to assess the potential for PFAS impact in drinking water for expanded at-risk populations. Testing was conducted for non-community supplies utilizing their own well or wells.

In March 2019, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) began quarterly sampling of Public Water Supplies sampled during Phase I which had Total Tested PFAS levels of at least 10 ppt but did not exceed the USEPA LHA (70 ppt PFOS+PFOA). This sampling will be done for one year (four quarters) and will help determine if there are seasonal changes in PFAS levels for these 61 supplies, to help prioritize and direct next steps.

Two systems which had Total Tested PFAS levels of at least 10 ppt but did not exceed the USEPA LHA (70 ppt PFOS+PFOA) use surface water as a source (Ann Arbor and Sims-Whitney Utilities Authority), and will be sampled as part of the Monthly PFAS Monitoring Program for Michigan’s Surface Water Supplies, including the Great Lakes.
